The town of Kalamata, built on the ruins of the Homeric city of Pherae, traces its history back to 2,600 BC. Nestled between mountain Taygetos and the Messinian Gulf the town is known today for its charm and liveliness and its beautiful 4-km long shore EU blue flag awarded. The figs, raisins, sesame, honey bars and olive oil of Kalamata are world-renowned. Kalamata's historic course from a Mycenaean city to Byzantium, under the rule of the Franks, the Venetians and the Turks offers the visitor a wide variety of historical monuments and attractions.
