The foundations of this building date back to 1252. Initially a custom post, it has seen hundreds of millions of people pay their duty, from members of royalty and rulers to commoners. Poets, philosophers, painters and musicians have captured this, the "indisputably most beautiful point on the Upper Elbe" in various works.
